| Congregation "Shira Hadasha" - Arad |
|
"ShiraHadasha" the Conservative Synagogue of Arad, was founded in 1977 when Danny Leshem, a young Arad resident, among others, discovered the Conservative congregation in Ashkelon. He immediately organized a group of friends to set up a similar framework in Arad. The congregation began by holding services in different members homes and in the local culturual center. Within a year the town council allocated a building for the synagogue and those "temporary" quarters in the Rishonim neighborhood are still occupied today.
Over the years, the congregation has had its ups and downs. The lack of a Conservative Rabbi in the synagogue has hampered its growth. In recent years the congregation has a core of about forty families. One of the congregation's biggest assets is that there are several members who are very knowledgable in conducting services, Torah reading and Judaic law. This has enabled the congregation to hold regular services on Friday evenings, Shabbat mornings and holidays.
The name "Shira Hadasha" means "new song". It refers to the passage in the prayer book: "Moses and the Children of Israel sang a new song unto You". The name shows that throughout generations, Jews have always tried to combine tradition and innovation as is done today in Shira Hadasha. Services are conducted according to Halacha (Jewish law) in a family atmosphere in which families sit together and women participate fully in the parayers.
"Shira Hadasha" believes that in addition to its own congregation, it has a social responsibility to the Arad community at large. In the past the synagogue provided an ulpan for new immigrants. Before holidays congregation members devote time to visiting various community projects such as a day mental health rehabilitation program and youth center, explaining about the holidays, traditions, blowing the shofar etc. Throughout the years different groups have been invited to join the congregation in celebrating the annual Tu B'Shvat seder and to take part in the Chanukah and Purim festivities.
"Shira Hadasha" synagogue also has a Bar/Bat Mitzvah program encouraging youth to attend services and to learn to take part in the prayers with emphasis on strengthening their ties to Jewish ritual and tradition. Two congregation members help prepare the girls and boys for their Bar/Bat Mitzvot. As part of of the program, children from families with financial difficulties are subsidized from the congregation's budget and receive their studies, ceremony, and the kiddush after services for a token sum.
The "Shira Hadasha" synagogue is situated in the same wooden asbestos shack that the city gave it nearly 30 years ago. Most of the other shacks in the neighborhood have been evacuated for both health and practical reasons. Presently, the congregation is busy trying to realize its long time dream to find new accomodations and in securing the financial resources for both the purchase of said premises and the necessary funding to support it. These are the biggest challenges that the synagogue faces today.
"Shira Hadasha" is the only conservative synagogue in Arad. The congregation always welcomes visitors who are encouraged to join them for prayers and other events. |
